My mother fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56.
我的媽媽和癌症奮鬥了近10年，她在56歲那年過世。

I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
我的身體帶原著有問題的BRCA1基因，它會大幅增加我罹患乳癌及卵巢癌的風險。

My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.
醫生評估我罹患乳癌的風險為百分之八十七，卵巢癌為百分之五十，雖然每個女人罹患的機率都不相同。

Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.
